Yet another Hurricane quickly developed over the Gulf this week and Hurricane Michael has brought devastation to many areas of the Florida panhandle. Unfortunately as we all know here in Texas, hurricanes are a real threat to us as well. These storms can blow up rapidly and people are often caught off-guard and unprepared. Instead of scrambling before a storm to get prepared – waiting in long lines, dealing with food, water, and supply shortages – there are several ways that you can plan ahead so that you’re prepared for the rest of the hurricane season.
Use the following resources to help you have your plan in place ahead of time:
Build a Disaster Kit
There are several things that you will need in your disaster kit to ensure the safety of you and your family in case of a hurricane. Of course, food and water is the priority. Try getting canned food that doesn’t require any added water or milk, such as beans and soup. Buy enough bottled water to last a few days and leave it in the freezer to ensure it remains cold if the power goes down. Use this Checklist Download to print and take with you and see also the Recommended Supplies .pdf file to get you started on being ready to go when disaster is at your doorstep.
In addition to food and water, you will need supplies, including battery-powered light sources, such as flashlights, a manual can opener, a first aid kit, and hygiene products, such as antibacterial wipes, toothpaste, etc. It is also helpful to have supplies such as flares, jumper cables, physical maps, and extra cans of gas in case you need to evacuate by car.
Fortify Your Home
To guarantee your home is protected every hurricane season, ensure that you have flood coverage, since during hurricane season it will be either incredibly expensive or completely unavailable. You’ll also want to make sure that you know how to turn off the gas and power to your home, cut down any trees and branches close to your house and car, and, if you can afford it, purchase a generator. Disaster Assistance. gov is an excellent resource if you have to evacuate and need to find temporary shelter or other recovery assistance.
Storm Tight Windows of Texas
As a local company, we care deeply about those we serve. Our neighbors know they can count on us, even in the face of adversity. When Hurricane Harvey devastated parts of Houston and the surrounding area, Storm Tight Windows of Texas, in conjunction with the Abundant Life Christian Center, helped gather and Distribute Supplies to people directly impacted by the storm. It was a very moving experience for all of us and we will never forget what it means to be ‘Texas Strong’.
